The Weight of The Glass Motivational Short Story

You Will Never See The Stress Same Way Again

Once in a university, a psychology professor conducted a stress management class. While addressing a class full of students, he raised a glass of water. Some students frowned as they expected the professor to ask the typical glass full or half question. However, the teacher asked students a rather amusing question, to their surprise. The professor raised the glass and asked, “How heavy is the glass that I am holding?” He pointed at a student and asked, “Mellisa would you care to answer?” Mellisa took a guess and predicted 200 gm. Several students took a turn and guessed the weight of the glass between 200 gm to 400 gm.

Professor smiled and explained that the absolute weight of the glass didn’t matter. It actually depends on how long you can hold it. If you hold it for a minute, nothing happens. If you hold it for an hour, your arm will begin to ache. If you hold it for an entire day, your hands will go numb and paralyzed to the extent that you might drop the glass, forcing it to break into pieces.

Professor continued and explained that the glass’s weight hadn’t changed, but the longer you held on to it, the heavier it became. The stress and worries of one’s life are quite similar to this glass of water. If you think about it for some time, there is no problem. If you think about it for an hour, you may feel hurt, but your mind feels paralyzed if you continue thinking about your problems all day long. You become incapable of concentrating on important things. Like the glass, the absolute weight of your problems doesn’t change, but the longer you hold on to them, the heavier it feels.

Moral: It’s essential to let go of the stress and worries. No matter what happens, you must put all your burdens down by the end of the day. So, always remember to put the glass down.
